Family, friends, and members of the Elkton community are mourning the tragic loss of Shane Brown, 40, who died following a skid loader accident on Tuesday afternoon while working on a family construction project near Elkton, South Dakota. His unexpected passing has left loved ones grieving while remembering a man known for his kindness, dedication, and willingness to help others.

According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at approximately 2:47 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at a residence located along South Dakota Highway 13 near 483rd Avenue. Emergency crews from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Elkton Fire Department, Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and North Memorial Air Service responded after receiving reports of an accident involving a Case 1845B skid loader.

When first responders arrived, Brown was found suffering from severe injuries. Investigators reported that the preliminary findings indicated Brown had been operating the skid loader while preparing for a future construction project on family property. During the incident, he was ejected from the equipment and became trapped underneath it.

Individuals at the scene acted quickly to assist Brown and remove him from beneath the machinery before emergency personnel arrived. Despite the immediate response and lifesaving efforts by those present and medical responders, Brown could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookings County Coroner continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. Officials have not released additional details as they work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the tragic incident.
