The Beach City community is mourning the passing of Gaylord Y. Barkman, a respected pastor, devoted family man, and longtime community servant whose life was defined by faith, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping others. Gaylord, 61, passed away from respiratory failure at OSU Medical Center in Columbus on Monday, July 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and children as he entered eternal rest.

His passing has left a profound sense of loss among family members, friends, church members, colleagues, and all those who were fortunate to know him. Throughout his life, Gaylord was recognized not only for his dedication to ministry but also for his kindness, humility, and genuine concern for the people around him.

Born on March 28, 1965, to the late Raymond J. Barkman and Clara (Mullet) Barkman, Gaylord grew up with strong values of faith, family, and service. Those principles remained central throughout his life and guided the many roles he embraced as a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, mentor, and friend.

In 1992, Gaylord married Celesta (Kauffman), beginning a partnership that would span 34 years filled with love, devotion, and shared faith. Together, they built a family grounded in faith and compassion. Loved ones remember Gaylord as a caring husband and a dedicated father who placed great importance on supporting and encouraging those closest to him.

A significant part of Gaylord’s life was his ministry at Christian Life Mennonite Church, where he served as a member and minister since 2001. His commitment to spreading faith and serving others became one of the defining aspects of his life. Through his ministry, he offered guidance, encouragement, and spiritual support to countless individuals who looked to him for wisdom and inspiration.

Gaylord’s passion for ministry also led him overseas to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he served as an IGo pastor for six years. During that time, he continued his mission of sharing faith, building relationships, and serving communities beyond his hometown. His dedication demonstrated his willingness to follow his calling wherever he was needed.

After returning from Thailand, Gaylord continued his professional career in sales with Ferra Manufacturing. Even outside of church ministry, he remained committed to connecting with people and making a positive difference. Coworkers and friends described him as someone who brought encouragement and kindness into every interaction, reflecting the same care and sincerity that defined his personal life.

Those who knew Gaylord often spoke of his welcoming personality, joyful spirit, and ability to make others feel valued. Whether through a conversation, a prayer, or an act of kindness, he had a lasting influence on many lives. His faith was not only something he practiced but something he lived through his actions and relationships.

Gaylord leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor his memory. He is survived by his wife, Celesta; six children, Cherie (Austin) Miller, Zachary (Rebekah) Barkman, Christina (Randy) Garcete, Trevor (Meagan) Barkman, Michael (Katrina) Barkman, and Chloe (Erwin) Miller; and 13 grandchildren who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Merle Beachy and brothers Ervin, Martin, James, Joel, Clement, and Lael Barkman.

For his family, Gaylord’s legacy extends far beyond the years he lived. It can be found in the faith he shared, the love he gave, and the countless lives he influenced through his ministry and service. His example of humility, generosity, and devotion will continue to inspire those who knew him.

As the Beach City community remembers Gaylord Y. Barkman, many are reflecting on a life dedicated to faith and helping others.
